'Paper Birds in a Forest' - 2021

Paper Birds in a Forest is an art piece in which a non-ending coded animation of birds flying in curved paths and landing on tree branches is randomly generated. The color of each projector's background, the number and position of the tree branches, and the number and direction of the birds are all random, ensuring no animations will ever run the same. It aims to bring the same relaxing experience outdoor birdwatching gives but indoors. It was made using Processing and Photoshop.

What struck me about generative art is that it can give artworks life through generated video because things can appear to be making their own decisions. I was motivated to create a scene that felt like it owned itself and also something that felt life-sized. My inspiration came from birdwatching, a relaxing activity that a lot of people are willing to do for extended periods of time, even though the same things may be happening over and over.
